Dos And Don’ts Of Clothing Alterations

August 18, 2007

Hi all……After all the blues I and my friends suffered at the hands of tailors and alteration people, I decided to do something about it. I decided to do some research regarding dos and don’ts about tailoring and especially clothing alterations.

I read stuff online, in fashion magazines and talked to the experts. Hey, I almost felt like fashion journalist! Not a bad feeling at all. After all we will be wearing clothes all our lives. And may be I can give it a go as career option (fashion journalist bit, silly). Any ways I reached some pretty interesting solutions to the clothing alteration blues. Here they are for all of you to read and add to it:

  • Whatever else you do; never cut a dress!
  • Try not to unstitch a finished garment. It will be very difficult to re-stitch them.
  • Thread type should be according to the fabric type.
  • Different fabrics react differently to the alterations, so before actual alteration, understand the type of fabric: muslin or knitted, or woven……whatever.
  • Follow the manufacturers’ direction regarding construction of the garment to minimize the human error.
  • Confirm the accuracy of measurements by matching a well fitting dress to the one in need of adjustments.

Hey guys, plz gimme feedback whether my observations regarding dress alterations are correct, and do add your bits. To start with, visit alterations.com. Take my word; its awesome.

Must Knows For A Bride About Wedding Dress Alterations

August 10, 2007

Getting a wedding gown is a complex and lengthy process. And finding a skilled person to alter it is even more difficult. I remember, my best friend Samantha’s wedding was almost ruined because of bad alteration job on her brand new wedding dress.

She made a big mistake in choosing a tailor who was not an expert in handling wedding dress alterations although he did alter other types of garments. As a result, it was a simple massacre of her beautiful wedding gown.

Thanks to all that improper needlework on it, the wedding dress had become even more ill-fitting than before. Every girl wants to look her stunning best on her D-day, but the way that tailor had altered it; her wedding gown was looking as shapeless as a trench coat hanging on a hanger. Oh God! It was a nightmare. Samantha just couldn’t stop crying.

Luckily her mother’s old wedding gown was in good condition. She finally wore that after some minor adjustments on the sleeves. It was a near miracle that saved her.

But that incident has made me realize that it’s always beneficial to gather some information before going in for alterations. In fact not only for bridal dress alterations but alterations for any type of garment.

Particularly for altering your wedding dress, which requires precision and expert handling, don’t take any chances. A bridal dress is way too delicate and intricately designed to be left to amateur hands.

Check out various websites, look up information on where you can find skilled seamstresses in your area and read up some tips on what to check before handing over the dress to the seamstress. Sites such as www.alterations.com offer some great tips and easy search options to locate a good seamstress in your neighborhood.

Finding the skilled, professional person to do the job is important, after all bridal alterations is not a child’s play.

Want That Perfect Fit? Go For Custom Tailoring!

August 4, 2007

I am quite fussy about what I wear, and I like my clothes perfectly fitted. More often than not, ready-made clothes are either too tight or too loose. It gets more frustrating as some of the ready-made stuff don’t even have margin for alterations.

I knew my friend Fatty, that’s how I call her fondly, used to get her dresses tailored to fit her broad frame. So I decided to take the chance. Boy! Was it a good decision? Sure, thanks to it, I got the fitting I wanted. That apart, some margin is always left for future alterations, if any.

The best thing about custom tailoring is that I can get whatever catches my fancy: the latest designs in vogue, the brand new styles; in line with my requirements.

Now I don’t need to stumble from shop to shop in search of that illusive fitting. It saves time and the quality is unmatchable.

But finding the right tailor was exasperating. I tried a few, but they were not up to the mark. Only if I had known of some directory or website providing information on the tailors in my town? Yeah, there is online help available if you are looking for expert tailors in your area, in fact anywhere in the US. Sites like http://www.alterations.com provide information about all kinds of tailors: specializing in dress tailoring or wedding gown tailoring or costume tailoring…….whatever.

August 1, 2007

Buying a wedding gown is a complex and lengthy process. And finding a skilled person to alter it is even more difficult. I remember, my best friend Samantha’s wedding was almost ruined because of bad alteration of her wedding dress.

She committed the blunder of her life by going to a person who, though good in alterations otherwise, but no expert in handling wedding dress alterations. On seeing her wedding gown, she was in tears. It was so damn ill-fitting. Every girl wants to look her stunning best on her D-day, but the way that tailor had altered her dress, she was looking like a duck in her wedding gown. Oh God! It was a nightmare.

Luckily her mother’s old wedding gown was in good condition. She finally wore that after some minor adjustments on the sleeves. It was a near miracle that saved her.

But that incident has made me realize that it’s always beneficial to gather some information in advance before going for alterations.

I think everyone should do that especially for wedding dress alterations, which requires precision and expert handling. People should check out various websites to get information about skilled seamstresses present in their area before actually going for that dream wedding dress.

Custom Tailoring in New York

July 2, 2007

Custom Tailoring seemingly needs more professional refinement than simple tailoring. At least that’s what I feel. And whenever I buy a readymade garment, I always need to go for alteration, thanks to my short height. Whether it’s a suit or a tracksuit, I always need to cut it into size.
In my perception Hugo’s Custom Alterations is one of the best custom tailors in New York. Ofcourse there are many others which are good at clothing alterations. But I have personal experience about Hugo’s. And I am really satisfied. Whatever may be the type of dress alterations, I have always got good service from them. I first came to know about them from the site www.alterations.com, while searching for a suitable tailoring shop in my residential area in the New York city. Since then I am in love with them.
